Movia’s Aleš Kristančič is the 8th generation wine maker in his family and a pioneer of the natural wine movement. He is regarded as one of the leading wine makers in Slovenia. The Movia estate dates back to the 18th century, passing into the hands of the Kristančič family in 1820.

The vineyards straddle the Italian and Slovenian border in the heart of the Collio region, though the winery itself is within Slovenia, hence the appellation designation of Brda (Brda is Slovenian for Collio).

A Mediterranean climate of moderate summers and sufficient precipitation all make the Brda/Collio region ideal for the production of dry wine. The vicinity of Alpine peaks provides just the right amounts of cool air for higher levels of acidity and aromatics to develop in the grapes compared to other Mediterranean regions. This makes this region perfect for the Rebula (Ribolla Gialla grape) and Friulano as well as the traditional French grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Movia wines are produced with the highest measure of respect towards nature, using bio-dynamic methods in the wine-making, including use of native yeasts. Aleš uses long maceration times (sometimes years) in old Slovenian oak, and does not rack his wines. The result is authenticity with a true purity of expression.

These wines require appropriate storage. All wines are low in sulphate (<50 mg/L).
